Ingredients

  • 2 cans 21 oz each apple pie filling
  • 1 box 15.25 oz yellow cake mix
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

Instructions

Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.

Prepare the Apple Layer:

  • Spread the apple pie filling evenly in the bottom of the greased baking dish.

Add the Spice Mixture:

  • In a small bowl, mix the cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the apple pie filling to infuse it with warm, spiced flavors.

Add the Cake Mix:

  • Evenly sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix over the spiced apple layer. Do not stir; leave the cake mix dry on top.

Drizzle with Butter:

  • Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the cake mix, covering as much of the surface as possible.

Optional Topping:

  • If using nuts, sprinkle the chopped pecans or walnuts over the top of the cake mix for added texture and flavor.

Bake:

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges. If the topping begins to brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil and continue baking.

Cool and Serve:

  • Let the cake cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. This allows it to set slightly, making it easier to serve.

Notes

  • Do not stir the cake mix into the apples; it needs to remain dry to form a crisp, golden topping.
  • Grease the baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  • Butter works best for flavor, but margarine can be used as a substitute if necessary.
  • Adjust baking time as needed; the cake should be golden and bubbling when done.
