- 1 cup long grain white rice not instant or brown
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 8 ounces chicken broth
- 8 ounces whole milk
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- ½ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Rinse the rice in a fine mesh sieve under cold water to remove surface starches. This helps the rice cook up fluffy with individual grains, preventing it from turning gummy.
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute, until lightly browned and fragrant.
Stir in the rice, chicken broth, milk, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, then cover the pan and reduce the heat to low.
Cook for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Avoid lifting the lid frequently to keep the steam trapped inside.
Remove the pan from heat. Stir in the parmesan cheese and chopped parsley.
Fluff the rice gently with a fork and serve warm.
Substituting Brown Rice: If using brown rice, expect a significantly longer cooking time—up to 45 minutes. You may need to add an extra splash of water if the pan looks dry.
Liquid-to-Rice Ratio: This recipe uses a standard 2:1 liquid-to-rice ratio. Keep the heat low and avoid lifting the lid often to retain steam. If the pan looks dry before the rice is fully cooked, lower the heat further and add about ¼ cup of water.
Storing Leftovers: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of broth or milk to restore creaminess.
